Bonaire island

As one of the Dutch Caribbean ABC Island, Bonaire is the smallest island in comparison with Aruba and Curaçao. With only 288 square kilometers in size the island is a hidden gem just 50 kilometers north of Venezuela.

The island is well known by divers and snorkeling fans for its stunning coral reefs that are spread out along the western coastline.
But the island has a lot more to offer, for nature & bird lovers, watersport or landsport enthusiasts, but also sunseekers will enjoy this little gem in the Caribbean.
The Bonaire Tourist Office uses a much saying slogan: It's in our Nature!

In a series of blogs about Bonaire we will share our love for the island, tell you about the history and culture, share our favorite places to go and offer you useful tips for a great vacation.

Bonaire's climate

It is summer all year round on Bonaire! Some visitors read Bonaire as Bon Aire, which is true, as on this island you still feel and breath pure air while palm leaves make a quiet sound rustling in the tradewinds.

The tropical savannah climate offers warm temperatures ranging from 26 degrees celcius in winter times to 32 degrees celcius during summer time. The seawater temperature varies from 25 degrees celcius to 29 degrees celcius.

Bonaire is geographically located outside the hurricane belt, which season typically lasts from June until November. While islands and countries in the eastern and nothern parts of the Caribbean have a bigger change of being located in a hurricane path, Bonaire's climate is usually only dealing with milder side effects, like less wind and some showers, making it a relatively safe destination all year round

Getting to Bonaire

The easiest way to arrive on Bonaire is by plane. Bonaire's Flamingo International Airport only has 1 landing strip but allows many visitors to make their way down to our beautiful island.
KLM, TUI and Corendon fly from Amsterdam and connect the island with the rest of Europe.
Delta Airlines (Atlanta), American Airlines (Miami), United Airlines (Houston & Newark) and JetBlue (New York) fly directly from the USA and WestJet (Toronto) has direct flights from Canada.
If you wish to combine Bonaire island with one of the surrounding islands in the Caribbean or our neighbouring islands of Curaçao and Aruba, you can fly directly with the inter-island connections from Divi Airlines, Z-Air or WinAir

What to do on Bonaire

As mentioned before Bonaire is well known as excellent shorediving destination, allowing the independent diver to go where they want and when they want, while respecting the guidelines set out by Stinapa, to safeguard the marine life and everybody's safety.
Bonaire is also an excellent destination for the beginner or less experienced diver, as many dive schools offer PADI / SDI courses or guided dives to enjoy the beauty of our underwater world.

Next to diving and snorkeling there are many more activities to enjoy while on Bonaire. The island is proud to be home where many windsurfing champs have started their carreers. Kitesurfing, wing foiling and fishing are some of the other great watersport activities while staying on the water surface.
The extended nature offers great options for hikers, mountain bikers and landsailing adventurers.
